Congress approves probe into corruption scandal

In a tight vote in the chamber of deputies the opposition Alianza por Chile coalition managed to scrape together just enough votes to force an inquiry into the MOP-Gescam scandal that has led to accusations against President Ricardo Lagos of nepotism and corruption. With only six months left of his mandate power is already ebbing from Lagos, but should any corruption charges stick it may damage the presidential campaign of his chosen successor, Michelle Bachelet, and dash any hopes Lagos himself might harbour of running again in 2011.
